Competitive Lotka–Volterra models to investigate long-term dynamics of grassland rodents in northeastern Kansas

    Description

    We examine long-term (1973-2003) population fluctuations and possible competitive interaction between five species of small mammals (Sigmodon hispidus, Microtus ochrogaster, Peromyscus lecuopus, Peromyscus maniculatus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis) that are syntopic in old-field habitat in northeastern Kansas. Previous studies describe the grassland community as a nonequilibrial community with annual and 3.5-year cycles. This project aims to simulate the cycles using Lotka–Volterra competitive models with time varying coefficients reflecting the impact of variation in temperature and precipitation on the population. If successful, the models can be used to predict the impact of severe weather changes and the climate changes on the rodent population dynamics. Furthermore, the numerical and analytical analysis of the models with constant coefficients may reveal possible limit cycles, extinction, survival, founder-control, and exclusion scenarios.
