Description
This project is my first big push to identify, catalogue, and cross-reference arias by many as yet unidentified composers used in pasticcio operas in England during the first two decades of the eighteenth century. The pasticcio opera became the predominant form of Italian opera in England before the opening of the Royal Academy of Music in 1719. Using RISM and other reference sources, we will go through arias in these pasticcio operas, determining not only who composed them initially, but how the music was adapted from their initial contexts (for particular singers, new dramatic contexts, etc.), and if these arias appear in other English or Italian musico-theatrical productions of the early eighteenth century. Our findings will contribute to a monograph on musical miscellany in early eighteenth-century England; we will likely have enough for a few conference papers and articles as well.
