Description
This interdisciplinary research project aims to develop a socio-epidemiological way of thinking to unpack the relationships between gang membership, gang violent crime, and individuals at risk of becoming gang members. Specifically, a compartmental modeling approach is employed to develop a deterministic model, which will represent the dynamics of violent gang crime and gang membership. The model will be used to determine the relative effectiveness of preventive and control measures including community-based interventions, community services, police efforts, and reform programs. Further analysis of the model will quantify the minimum efforts required for gang suppression and it will determine possible dynamics of gang membership and violent gang crimes. The practical outcomes of this project (i.e. the quantification of minimal control efforts and the relative effectiveness of control measures) might be of particular interest to the police department, the department of corrections, and communities interested in reducing gang violence. It is speculated that the outcomes of this project will be a basis for detailed analysis of spatio-temporal crime patterns and a grant proposal for external funding.
