Dolls for Democracy was an initiative sponsored by B’nai B’rith Women in Kansas City in the mid-twentieth century. Women would take exquisitely detailed portrait dolls of notable role models (e.g., Jackie Robinson, Emma Lazarus, Jonas Salk, Helen Keller) into school classrooms, scout troop meetings, and other settings. Using the dolls to hold children's attention, the women would talk about overcoming obstacles and being a good citizen. The archival records of the Dolls for Democracy program are held in part at the State Historical Society of Missouri Kansas City's Research Center, and this project involves using those records to better understand women's rhetorical practices. Undergraduate researchers will have the opportunity to transcribe documents in the archive and potentially conduct oral history interviews with "doll ladies" who are still living in the Kansas City area.

Undergraduate researchers can enroll for up to three hours of independent study credit in English.
Undergraduate researchers will have the opportunity to transcribe documents in the archive and potentially conduct oral history interviews with "doll ladies" who are still living in the Kansas City area. Undergraduate researcher should be available for research meeting twice a month.
