Research Description

I teach classes on the history of Africa, the Middle East, and the World. My research has primarily been on the Ottoman Empire and its economic and cultural life. I am espeically interested in the economic development of the Eastern Mediterranean and the dynamics of ethnic cleansing and demographic engineering that accompanied growth in key industries like tobacco. I have also conducted research on Middle Eastern and North African migration to the Americas and I am the coordinator for a website called The Middle West: MENA Histories of the American Heartland, which provides historical analysis of key events, people, and institutions in the connection between the Middle East and the American Midwest.
